Who Had the Best Downton Abbey-Style Updo?

February 4th, 2012 at 02:10pm Under Green+ Personal Care

Everything old is new again, and with the wildly popular success of Downton Abbey , there seems to be a rising interest in King George V-era beauty. Keira Knightley , a Brit herself, looked absolutely stunning earlier this week, donning a shiny, wavy chignon at the Dangerous Method premiere, while Ashley Greene did her own take on the century-old trend, sporting a voluminous, tossed-to-the side look. And although short styles weren’t quite en vogue back in the 1910s, Katherine Heigl still managed to achieve a stylishly upper-crust coiffure by wearing her chin-length bob in a loose, twisted bun. All styles are swoon-worthy enough to bring out the smelling salts, but which one has you politely clapping the hardest? Who Had the Best Downton Abbey-Style Updo? 4 Bright, On-Trend Makeup Shades to Try Right Now

February 2nd, 2012 at 02:02pm Under Green+ Personal Care

We’re seeing neon colors dominate the fashion world, but these bright, bold shades aren’t limited to clothing. Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freeman (who has also been guest blogging on BellaSugar) recently shared his advice on how to work vivid hues into your makeup routine . But he has a few more things to add: his top favorite shades for getting the look are listed below. Colored mascara : Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Royal Blue ($4). “Apply after your usual mascara, but just to tips,” Brett advises. “It’s perfect for lunch with friends. In the light, your lashes will get a flash of color.” Liquid liner : Wet ‘n Wild Mega Liner in Turquoise ($3). “Do you makeup as per usual, and add just the thinnest line along the top of the lashes,” Brett explains. “When you blink or look down it’s a beautiful surprise!” Gloss : Estée Lauder Lip Gelee in Electric Violet ($20). “Everyone looks amazing in this shade,” says Brett. “It’s packed with pigment but in a very sheer, wearable formula. Pair it with an all-cream outfit to give it a little edge.” Nail polish : OPI in Fly ($5). “If you want to try it without a full commitment,” Brett says of this polish from OPI’s Nicki Minaj collection, “do it on your toes and see what feedback you get.”

What We’re Sweet On: Fun, Flaky Topcoats

January 17th, 2012 at 11:05am Under Green+ Personal Care

If you missed out on the “flaky” nail polish trend the first time around, this is your chance to try it out. Zoya’s new Fleck Effect topcoats ($8 each) are full of Mylar “flecks” that create a pretty holographic effect on nails. They’re all transparent and pretty versatile, but if we had to choose one we’d take the pink shade, Chloe. The orange, gold, and red tones in the flecks will go well with any warm-toned nail polish, and the shade reminds us of the fire inside an opal. The other two shades, Maisie (blue) and Opal (green) are also really fun to wear, but Maisie looks better over cool-toned polishes, and Opal is prettiest over black, navy, and green, making it a little more edgy. Get them now and you’ll be able to wear them all year long.

Get Ashley Greene’s Pretty People’s Choice Makeup Look

January 12th, 2012 at 07:08pm Under Green+ Personal Care+ Products

When it comes to pretty, polished makeup looks, Ashley Greene should win an award for perfect shade pairings. At the People’s Choice Awards, for instance, the Twilight star looked absolutely radiant coupling bronze eye makeup and subtly stained red lips. Vanessa Scali, who created the look, shares tips on how you can get the style at home, using products from Mark (for which Ashley is an ambassador): Eyes : “Ashley wanted a hint of smolder in the eyes but didn’t want anything dark or overdone,” explained Scali. To accomplish that feel, Scali started by applying the brand’s I-Mark Metallics Custom Pick shadow in Truffle on Ashley’s lid and under the bottom lashes, blending for a sheer effect at the crease, and extending it outward to elongate. She then applied brown and black liners for a “feline resemblance.” Cheeks and lips : Then, to bring it all together, Scali used Just Pinched blush in Peachy on the apples of Ashley’s cheeks. And for that lightly stained finish, Scali used a lipstick. “I applied Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Cha Cha to the center of Ashley’s lips, gently pressing the color in and blending outward toward the edge, giving the lips a pop of color but keeping the line soft and easy,” she said.

Makeup Ideas: Nighttime Eyes

December 29th, 2011 at 12:13pm Under Green+ Personal Care

We’re excited to present this story from our friends at Allure : If you spend most of the year wearing safe nudes or neutrals, a New Year’s Eve bash is the perfect moment to throw caution (like confetti) to the wind. Here, a few last-minute tips on how to get eyes worthy of a year-end finale. Add some shimmer. Look for metallic versions of your favorite shades. “That’s always going to be a winner, no matter what the trends are,” says makeup artist Gucci Westman. “Metallic burgundy, metallic chocolate, and a metallic pearly highlighter, those are really nice staples to have.” Think rich, saturated colors. “I’m really into gorgeous emerald green shadows paired with chocolate brown, gray, or black,” Westman says. If bold colors make you nervous, draw a gutsy shadow along your lash line, rather than sweep it over your lids. It’s a less intense way to try out adventurous shades. Try a shimmery smoky eye. Makeup artist Romy Soleimani suggests rimming your top lids with a black gel liner, then drawing over it with a shimmery shadow to increase its longevity. “Even if the shadow on top fades throughout the night, the liner will stay,” she says.
