January Jones Joins the Pink Hair Brigade

March 14th, 2012 at 05:19pm Under Hair Facts

January Jones has always been a fashion risk taker, but in the past most of her daring hair and makeup has had a vintage homage feel that dovetailed nicely with her role in Mad Men . Now, though, it looks like she’s gone back to the future with the new cotton-candy-hued highlights she showed off at a PaleyFest 2012 event honoring the show. January certainly isn’t the only star who has tried pink hair. Dianna Agron , Katy Perry , and Nicki Minaj have all tried the shade lately. January’s look is a little more subtle, though, and is reminiscent of the pink hue Rachel McAdams sported a few years back . Betty Draper might not approve, but it looks like January is showing the rest of us how to make an edgy hair color more wearable.

The Politics of Plastic Surgery

March 8th, 2012 at 07:24pm Under Hair Facts

We’re happy to present this story from our friends at Allure : Super Tuesday has come and gone with no apparent progress in the GOP presidential sweepstakes and barely a hint of drama – at least in comparison to the political excitement of a place like, say, Egypt. If you haven’t heard, that nation was rocked by a plastic surgery scandal earlier this week when a male member of parliament was busted by his own doctors for having a nose job and then lying about it. Anwar Al-Bulkimy, of the extreme Islamist Al-Nour party (seen above), checked in for the elective surgery, but claimed to the world outside that he had been beaten by masked gunmen. Supporters streamed to his bedside, until his surgeon called in to a popular TV show and offered the truth behind the politician’s bandaged face. It turns out extreme Islamists look harshly on vanity procedures, and Al-Bulkimy was soon out of a job. The moral of this story: don’t lie to voters about something that’s written all over your face. Critics have hounded Russia’s Vladimir Putin for using Botox, and Italy’s scandal-ridden ex-prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, whose hair plugs were visible from France, was cornered into admitting a “slight retouch” of his eyelids after disappearing for weeks in 2004 and returning with a boyish mien. Back in the 1990s, Argentine president Carlos Menem tried in vain to pass off work on his cheeks as swelling caused by a wasp bite. Could it ever happen here? The pressure to look good is no doubt equally strong, and the faces of politicians such as John Kerry, Arnold Schwarzenegger , and Nancy Pelosi have all come under scrutiny. But among the frontrunners of the current election cycle, there just doesn’t seem to be the need. The only intervention incumbent Barack Obama could use is from a hair colorist to mask the gray, and likely Republican rival Mitt Romney is, at least by outward appearances, genetically perfect – with hair so thick it makes regular headlines . Reader’s Experience with Dermaroller

March 8th, 2012 at 06:43pm Under Hair Facts

I have had expierence with the dermaroller. Depending on the length of the needle it can be pretty discormforting although I hear that it stimulates certain growth factors by wounding the area applied. Old news in terms of methods used in Medical fields but new to hair. Follica has a method however I have not heard much on their progress. Does it work? Well I did not use it long enough because of some concerns in terms of what you mentioned sterile needle. I do however believe that one of your contributing writers has marketed this type of product. Its suppose to make rogaine more absorbable like Retin A in which removes the upper layer of skin. Even Platelet Rich Plasma therapy used for hair loss uses a product similiar to the derma roller. Unproven? Well there was a case of female hair loss that was quite impressive with this therapy. If you are interested I can see if I can find the link. Keep on educating the public Doctor Rassman. The contributor you’re referencing is Dr. Farjo, as his name was attached to something called the Scalproller in a press release. At the time, he said, “I can not endorse the Scalproller device itself until further clinical research is at hand.” You can read his full response here . A single case doesn’t necessarily meet the standard for calling something a proven treatment, but I would be interested in reading about it if you have the link. Please keep me informed and thanks for sharing! Tags: hairloss , hair loss , dermaroller

I Took Steroids, So Would I Benefit From a Transplant?

March 7th, 2012 at 08:44pm Under Hair Facts

dear doctor. I am 29 yrs old, I took steroids about 10 years back because I was heavily into bodybuilding and competing. I noticed I started to lose hair so I stopped and went on finasteride which my doctor gave me. I have been on the drug for about 10 years with moderate success, other people cannot see the balding but I can. As I was going bald I would take pictures of my scalp when my head was shaved and I noticed I was thinning in the classic horse shoe pattern with sort of like a thick bridge of hair in the middle of my scalp going from ear to ear but minor thinning in the crown and front part. Since I know my pattern already from taking steroids, would I benefit from a transplant or since I know my final pattern at my age its not worth it? Thank you, I do hope to hear from you, please. As you are now off the steroids and have been for some time, you will be treated as any other balding patient. Of course, you took some steps backward with hair loss that may never return, but that does not mean it is hopeless. A visit to a doctor’s office who cares about you and has the requisite skills in the hair restoration filed would be your best option. What you need is a good Master Plan for short and long term hair loss management. Tags: hairloss , hair loss , steroids , hair transplant

How Long Should I Wait Before Considering Filling In My Strip Scar with FUE Grafts?

February 6th, 2012 at 05:08pm Under Hair Facts

Thanks very much for the informative blog. Say a strip patient is about 6 months out from FUT surgery and now has buyers regret (please, no reminder about thinking things through first!), and wants to fill in the scar with FUE/beard hair/etc. Is there any advantage to do it at this time or does one need to wait one year. I wonder if scar is more or less vascular when healing. Thanks. If the donor scar has healed, you don’t need more surgery, and the scar is narrow, then follicular unit extraction (FUE) to the linear scar is possible. FUE does not fill in wide scars well, though. Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP), on the other hand, may be a better approach. Explore it all. Tags: smp , fue , surgery , hair transplant , pigment
