Jennifer Connelly Signs On With Shiseido – Again

February 3rd, 2012 at 06:48pm Under Personal Care+ Products+ Skin Care

In the late ’80s, a sprightly Jennifer Connelly linked up with Shiseido to help advertise the brand’s Perky Jeans line, and now the actress is back. But this time around it’s in a more sophisticated role: Jennifer has just been signed as Shiseido’s first global spokesperson . “I’ve had a long relationship with Shiseido – I worked with them in the ’80s on an ad campaign, and have been using their products ever since,” Jennifer explained to WWD , adding, “It’s nice to reconnect with them after so many years.” Part of her duties as the new spokesperson will be to promote the brand’s Future Solution LX skin care line. In addition, seeing that Shiseido turns 140 this year, surely Jennifer will be involved in helping the beauty brand celebrate such a milestone. And if you haven’t seen Jennifer showing off some Reagan-era shadows with flair, it’s worth a watch.

The Simply Surprising Reasons French Women Have Enviably Glowy Skin

February 3rd, 2012 at 01:02pm Under Personal Care+ Products+ Skin Care

When Bertrand Thomas and his wife, Mathilde, (pictured above) launched Caudalie in 1995 with just three items on the roster, it was the first company to use the antiaging benefits of grape-seed polyphenols in skin care. Since then, the vinotheraphy-based brand has launched a full range of products, using practically all parts of the grape, from skin to stalk. In fact, its radiance-boosting Beauty Elixir ($16 to $46), which contains grape fruit extract, is so popular, even Victoria Beckham has been tweeting about it . But what is it about French women that makes them seem so pleasantly content and perfectly complected? In the NYT best-seller, French Women Don’t Get Fat , author Mireille Guiliano describes a lifestyle that is full of variety, where deprivation is replaced by savoring things to the fullest. And when it comes to beauty, Thomas explains it’s a similar mindset: “Balance is the key word: French women balance food their food and balance their lifestyle.” To see just what Thomas means on how French women get it right, keep reading.

Brazilian Blowout Agrees to Up Its Safety Warnings in CA

February 2nd, 2012 at 12:43am Under Personal Care+ Products

The formulas will be the same, but change is already in progress for manufacturer GIB’s controversial Brazilian Blowout and Acai Professional Smoothing Solution. Last November, California brought a lawsuit against the company for making misleading claims about the safety of the products, specifically the levels of formaldehyde contained within, but now the parties have come to an agreement. “This settlement requires the company to disclose any hazard so that Californians can make more informed decisions,” California Attorney General Kamala Harris’s office said in a statement. As a part of the deal, the makers of Brazilian Blowout have agreed to label the aforementioned product with hazard warnings (a process which they have already started), and will also provide salons with pamphlets containing safety precaution information. See more of the outcome when you read more.

Why You Should Break That Hair-Washing Addiction

February 1st, 2012 at 02:00pm Under Personal Care+ Products

If your hair has been less than lustrous as of late, factors such as cold weather and excess toweling can be the culprits. Daily shampooing, however, can also be the cause of dull, dry-looking strands. That’s why John Ryan, hairstylist and owner of Festoon Salon in San Francisco, advises his clients to skip the washing every single day. The reason? Natural oils provide shine and protection, therefore making the hair look healthier and more radiant. And by busting out of the shampoo-each-day routine, you’ll likely even notice that your hair styles even better with its natural oils intact. Additionally, since oil production reduces with aging, you’ll also likely notice you won’t even have to wash nearly as often with each passing birthday. Skipping the shampoo step every day, however, “doesn’t mean you have to be unhygienic,” Ryan explains. In fact, you can still get it wet and add styling products as needed. “I sell a lot of dry shampoo,” he quips. So just think: a few weeks back we all scoffed after discovering a video from the 1950s suggesting that women wash their hair every other week . Although that may be a tad extreme, maybe they were on to something with their anti-rinse, -lather, and -repeat mantra.

We’re bringing back classic Bobbi Brown lip colors solely based on what the fans want.” Voting closes on Feb. 29, and the lip colors with the most votes will be available this Fall. What We’re Sweet On: Excellently Organic Eye Cream

January 30th, 2012 at 11:05am Under Personal Care+ Products+ Skin Care

Dried-out skin under your eyes isn’t pretty, but it’s a reality for a lot of us. The only thing that really helps is a moisture-trapping hydrator, which is why we’ve been using KTO Vitality Rose & Cucumber eye cream ($30). The primary ingredient is pure vegetable glycerin, which packs a hydrating punch and helps keep the moisture around, too, and the cream also has aloe, shea butter, jojoba, and a host of other excellent oils and soothers. It makes the little lines we get around our eyes from the in-office dry heat vanish completely, and after we put it on, our skin just feels a lot more comfortable, too. And if you’re wondering about the naturalness of the product, most of the ingredients are certified organic, and it’s free of artificial preservatives, parabens, and sulfates. Plus, the price point is extremely reasonable for a product that works as well or better than some $80 products we’ve tried. All around an excellent bet if the windows to your soul are looking a little down at heel.

Propecia, the FDA, and High Grade Prostate Cancer

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:22pm Under Hair Loss+ Products

Dear Dr. Rassman: I am a bit concerned about continuing with Propecia in light of the recent finding on the risk of high grade prostate cancer. At the FDA hearing in June of last year, the FDA statistician estimated that the risk of getting high grade prostate cancer using 5mg of Finasteride over a 7 year period was 1 in 200. I realize that Propecia is one fifth that, but even a 1 in 1,000 risk when it comes to an aggressive cancer seems, well, risky. If you told me that there was a 1 in 200 or 1 in 1,000 chance the plane I was about to board would crash, I would not board. So, my question is this: is there anything in the study you see that makes you think it’s safe to keep going with this drug? I believe you are reading things out of context. The FDA site states: “ The labels of all 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) are being revised based on FDA’s review of two large studies examining whether these drug products (Proscar, Avodart) reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The studies did find an overall reduction in the risk of lower-grade forms of prostate cancer, but both studies also showed an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. As a result of these two studies, the labels of all FDA-approved 5-ARIs will be revised to include new information that these drug products may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. The product labeling will also state that 5-ARIs are not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer .” [ Source ] I did a quick Google search and found prostate cancer statistics , unrelated to finasteride use. I found, “ the age-adjusted incidence rate was 156.0 per 100,000 men per yea r”. I know this is not exact, but if you consider in 7 years you can multiply 156 x 7 which will be 1092 cases for 100,000 men in 7 years. That is 1 in 92 in 7 years. For the statisticians out there, please correct my back of the envelope calculations. My point is: Propecia does not cause cancer. The studies that the FDA quotes and the media has latched on to point to how those men who ended up with prostate cancer while on finasteride had a higher grade prostate cancer than men who did not take finasteride… but the controversy of why this is, was not clear from the studies. A final point is that if you are concerned about the medication, you do not have to take it. It is an option I give to all my patients. This is one of the many reasons why a doctor should prescribe you the medication, because each and every patient is different and the prescribing doctor should be there to address all of these issues one on one with the patient.
